Star Driver Massacred by Censors

Fabulous mecha anime Star Driver has become the target of utterly draconian and shameless censorship it seems, with the crude mutilation of the title not even bothering to resort to the figurative fig leaf of foreshadowing and plot construction.

Some complain that it is all but impossible to understand what is going on thanks to this overzealous censorship, as any explanatory dialogue or even helpful noises have been removed too.

As you can see above and below, viewers in some areas are treated to mysterious plot twists and unexplainable incidents, amongst other efforts at DVD sales promotion. The complex storylines and imagery promised were completely expunged in favour of unitelligable actions by the characters, gratioitous fanservice for male and female audiences, but none of the genre-altering plot which is the major premise of the title.

Interestingly, previous works by Bones were broadcast with the plot making about as much sense… Is there some underlying factor prompting these actions?

Those not intent on waiting for the DVDs for the unedited version of the plot will have to make due with what they’re given, as Star Driver’s intentions are not clear on any station it’s being broadcasted on.

  1. Implying Star Driver doesn’t make any sense

I don’t have any problem with this show but it strange because most of the people including you suffers “completely missing the point” syndrome with this show. Did i missing something?

      1. It’s lulzy & ridiculous but it doesn’t mean what happen right now is plotless. There are something going on but the mystery shrouded on this show is what drives the story. This show is like reading poem, you can view it in different angle.
Then again, it’s Enokido show so i expected people would take some time to understand anything.

  2. I guess I’ll make a real comment.

I don’t think it’s so much I’m confused about Star Driver, it just seems to be tremendously mishandled. The end of the previous episode made it sound like Sugata would stay in a coma for at least longer than a day (lol) and now his betrayal/hypnotism comes off as pretty ridiculous. Not only was the set up telegraphed miles away, I don’t even think they’re that good of friends anyway, unless sulking and trying to give away your fiance is a sign of friendship.

Little by little we see the wheels coming off the rails…

  3. I don’t like the characters in the show for some reason, and it’s overall a bit too flashy for me. Granted, it flashyness could turn into awesomeness if I liked the characters more… I can see that people are either loving it or hating it, some people say it’s the best thing since sliced bread, and some people (like you Scamp) say it’s ridiculous and plotless. I already dropped it at the first episode, so I can’t say more, because then I would be complaining about shows I didn’t watch. GAH, TVTROPES WARPED MY MIND! HELP ME!

Also Scamp, you NEED to do a review of the AWESOME 6 episode of Panty and Stocking, and the 7 Episode. Transformers. Panty. Stocking. Robot. GAH! And telling us that gambling and stripping and selling all your things at ebay is a-ok.

  4. YOU JUST DON’T GET IT SCAMP OF THE DEEP THEMES IN STAR DRIVER THAT MAKE IT LIKE RGU AND EVEN SURPASS IT. STOP BEING SO SUPERFICIAL TO MAKE YOUR E-PEEN GO UP LIKE YOU DID DURING THAT ANIBLOG TOURNEY THING!

    1. I can’t wait for the next aniblog tourney so I can have a whole new generation of anibloggers who realise what a massive circle-jerker I am

      1. Hey, and maybe I can say to your face again, “Oh, yeah, and there was that aniblog tournament thingy a few months back, that thing just looked like such a dramafest, I try to steer clear of stuff like that…” LULZ SOCIAL MISSTEP

  5. I don’t really mind that Star Driver doesn’t make a lot of sense, it makes it fun to guess what’s going on. But it better not end up like Xam’d though… ugh that was horrible.

      1. BONES likes to take the “show, don’t tell” mantra to extremes. I’m not sure if they make everything up on the fly, or if they just assume audiences are geniuses.

  6. Teens are sexual predators. Kids that don’t follow that pack mentality get lost in the shuffle or get eaten/deflowered by giant robots. Insert flamboyant knight in shining armor that can never exist in real life so the reality of the situation is lessened to be pallatable for otaku. That’s Star Driver.

It’s all pretty straightforward to me, it just gets more and more boring and monotonous with each episode. I just want more chanting cultists and weird robots. Instead I get typical high school drama wrapped in mecha-rainbows.

  7. I believe the fact this show doesn’t make sense is its selling point. It’s interesting because you don’t know what’s going on and you really want to finally understand what the hell is this all about. Of course, it’s Bones so you will never fully grasp it, but shhh! It’s a secret! ^.^
    KIRABOSHI!

  8. bones anime always feels that way, try blassreiter, or shangrila.

but, i dont see what u meant be censorship of the plot. Even those it doesnt make too much sense, i dont see any awkward cut-off in plot, like, i dont feel anything missing.

      1. Nonono, neither of those shows exist. In fact, everything post-06 made by Gonzo is a myth. A conspiracy. Gonzo stopped making anime in 2006, apart from that one time when they decided to help out AIC with Seto no Hanayome.

Yup, definitely don’t exist. Blassreiter, Rosario to Vampire, Shangri-La, Tower of Druaga, Strike Witches, Saki, Dragonaut. NONE OF THESE ANIME EXIST ARRGGHHH!!!!

      2. FACT: I drank my way through Dragonaut. It was the only way I could finish it.

Red Garden was the last good thing they made… and Afro Samurai was the last enjoyable thing they made…

  9. scratches his head I only watched the first stardriver epi so I can’t say anything about that. But which Bones animes do you mean, the shows I watched seemed quite normal in the story department.(dtb, fma:b,eureka, scrapped princess, wolf’s rain, ouran, xam’d. And probably a few more.)

    1. DtB normal? I’m convinced they took the Evangelion approach of ‘making it up as we go along’. Xam’d is the other one I would have used as an example of a mess of a story.
