Hunter x Hunter 86 – DORARARARARARA

Wow, didn’t know Madhouse was going to work on Diamond Is Unbreakable! I bet that reference hasn’t been made a million times already! Amusingly enough, Knuckle Bine’s seiyuu, Wataru Takagi, is voicing Josuke Higashikata’s main buddy, Okuyasu Nijimura, in JoJo All-Star Battle. Everything comes full circle! (Meanwhile, Josuke Higashikata’s seiyuu, Wataru Hatano, is voicing Shaiapouf! It’s a small world.)

This week’s episode stresses the urgency of the mission to defeat the Chimera Ants while acknowledging that the available Hunters are likely not totally equipped for the job. I mean, the friggin’ chairman of the Hunter Committee takes one look at Neferpitou and says, “Hm, nope, I’m probably not strong enough to defeat that.” Pretty scary! No doubt Netero is still quite a fearsome dude; even when he poo-poos the notion of him being the strongest Nen user in the world, Morel and Knov still have enough respect for his abilities to believe he can defeat Neferpitou. (Also, I am sure you all are with me in being mad curious about seeing Netero battle at the peak of his powers.) Assuming we can take Netero at his word, though, this trio of Hunters has a massive task ahead of them and not much time in which to complete it, since the King’s growth appears quite far along judging by the preview.

And then you have Gon and Killua. Their roles in this arc will be quite interesting. Gon is correct when he says that simply defeating the two disciples is not their goal. Rather, their true goal is to get strong enough to enter NGL and rescue Kite. Essentially, then, Gon and Killua must rival Netero in strength, which seems rather … unrealistic. Even though Gon and Killua have gotten tons stronger during the course of the series, there has always been what I think is a realistic cap on just how far they advance. They are both acknowledged as prodigies by various people in the world, but they don’t take down Hisoka the moment they learn Nen, and they don’t beat up Genthru without a ridiculous plan after getting a ton of training. It’s long way from that to becoming near as strong as one of the greatest Nen users in the world, even if he is at half of his peak power.

At the same time, Morel’s disciples, Knuckle and Shoot, are also being tested, which adds an interesting element to the mix. They’re both total unknowns in terms of power and abilities, which is how Gon wants it, since it would be the same situation they confront with the Chimera Ants. I’m mostly sure that Gon and Killua will win, because they’re the heroes and all and they have so much on the line, but there’s enough doubt in my mind from the sheer amount of power they would have to gain in such a short time to actually be helpful while in NGL that I can’t help but wonder what would happen were they to lose. You know, just as a way to keep beating the optimism out of Gon. We’ll see, I guess; just too much stuff we don’t know to really say what will happen.

Meanwhile, Neferpitou becomes ever more frightening. That ridiculous En is basically a giant security alarm now, which makes any potential infiltration plans ridiculously complicated. Then it’s revealed that Neferpitou is strong enough to say, “Well, I think I’ll develop the power to bring the dead back to life! Then I can kill Kite again and again! Sounds like fun! Nyaa~” Good lord. The Hunters are basically being asked to kill a god right now. And Gon and Killua are supposed to suddenly become strong enough to take that on? Man. Horrifying. And then there’s Neferpitou’s bro, the rainbow-winged bug prince whose powers we don’t even know yet beyond the ability to read minds. So that’s fun.

In happier news, Biscuit is back and this lady, Palm, is also here and all dokidoki~ for Gon, and somehow it’s kind of cute and not creepy even though Gon is like barely a teenager or whatever right now. Also, if I hadn’t looked it up, I never would have guessed Palm is voiced by Kikuko Inoue. Lately I feel like I hear her only when I watch old stuff. Anime needs more Kikuko Inoue, I say.

  1. Netero is a filthy old liar. Combined with what Morel said in the last episode about nen battles, my money’d be on Netero in a fight against Pitou.

And we get to see Morel’s ability this episode! Manipulating smoke – I can’t wait to see how far it can go.

    1. Yeah, obviously Morel’s smoke power is useful for scouting (though Neferpitou seems to have noticed it, anyway), but I wonder how it can be used offensively.

  2. Obligatory “It gets better”.

Glad that Madhouse did a great job with this episode, since in the manga it felt really out of place. Here the transition is much smoother. And hopefully they will, you know, just improve it pacing-wise like they’ve done in many other places!

  3. Where the hell is Ging during all this? Isn’t he like the current strongest Hunter or something? You’d think someone would give him a call.

    1. Given how he is, Ging most likely won’t be bothered about it. He knows that if push comes to shove, he has to do something about it but the way his attitude is, he wouldn’t be too bothered until shit hits the fan way too hard.

Also, remember that not even the Hunter Association could find where he is which is also why Kite had to actively roam about to find him.

    2. They probably did try to get ahold of Ging. They probably couldn’t or he just said “I’m busy, find someone else.”

And in regards to Netero vs Pitou, yes Nen battles can have wildly random outcomes, but Pitou is also boasting that chimera ant body, which is incredibly strong and resilient even before being amplified by Nen. We saw Pitou jump like 2 miles after Kite in a matter of seconds, using what appeared to just be leg muscles. So maybe Netero wasn’t lying. He’s probably not even in his top shape, who knows when the last time he had an encounter that was this dangerous.

    3. Ging isn’t a guy easy to find. He is kind of weird even for hunters standars. He may be in some crazy place riding a dinosaur over a bigger dinosaur xD

    4. He’s one of the top 5 nen users (which Netero is part of) but as a hunter their are many that are around his level though he is one of the best.

Ging is a double star hunter. A single Star Hunter is a Hunter that is known to be a pretty much the best or one of the best at his field of hunting. Morel, Knov and Kite are Single Star for example. Being hella strong is a requirement for this as well.

A double Star Hunter is a single star hunter that has at least one student that has become a single star hunter. Ging and Biscuit are double star,

Triple Star Hunters are the cream of the Crop and rare as hell as only ten of them are around (I can’t remember if there are currently Ten or if there has only ever been ten) Requirements for becoming one is that you are a double star hunter and are at the level of a single star hunter at multiple fields of hunting. Netero is a Triple Star.

    5. Haha, more evidence that Ging is an asshole.

Just as interesting: Where is Hisoka? You’d think he’d jump at the chance to fight super powerful Nen users, but maybe he just doesn’t know about the situation. I doubt anyone would trust Hisoka enough to use him for this kind of thing, and it’s probably top secret.

  4. Can’t help but ask, whose pompadour is the best? Kuwabara’s, Josuke’s, Knuckle’s?

I’m a Kuwabara fan so I’d probably choose him.

    1. I’d go with Josuke’s hair, just because I feel like he’d kick your ass if you insulted his hair by not choosing it.

  5. One thing I learned from this episode is that Biske-chama might be a fujoshi. Seriously, reading adult material in the presence of kids? Lol.

  6. I’m hoping we’ll get to see Biske get to hulk out on some chimera ants, but I have a feeling she’s not going to get involved directly.

  7. Scary as Neferpitou is right now, the possibility that the king will be stronger than him , even for this series, is truly horrifying. it’s like fighting Hades and Zeus or something.

When Knov talked about how Nen battles are different and not based entirely on pure strength last episode, I wasn’t convinced. Maybe when the aura/neutral strength is close, like an order of magnitude close. but the king’s guard and presumably the king are so much more powerful.

Since the revelation that the chimera ants can use Nen it came to my mind that the only way that this arc will end in a good way(Gon and Killua surviving), is by introducing a deus ex mechina. it will be thoughtful and shit, but it will still be a deus ex mechina. mark my words(and I haven’t read the manga obviously)

    1. Yeaaaaah, the antagonists are so strong that I can’t see how this will be resolved through normal means. I’m not totally opposed to Deus Ex Machinas — they can be OK if they’re done in a suitably outrageous way (see the ending of Battle Tendency), but I’m not so sure that would fit here.

  8. Quick correction. Knuckle and Shoot are Morel’s students. Palm is Knov’s

Also fun fact Knuckle, Shoot and Palm are all named after Baseball terms. Gyro the king of NGL is named after one as well.

  9. It should be noted that Netero said their only target is the Queen and that he would like to avoid fighting Neferpitou. So their job is not to kill a god it’s to kill that gods mother.

  10. I really wish theyd have a fouble episode week… :/

Also, Knuckle!! Haha! Next to Kite, he’s my favorite!

  11. Just a thought. If the hunters goal is to kill the queen, then what would happen to the royal guards? Wouldn’t that make them make them have their own goals? which pretty much I bet is to massacre every human on the planet

    1. Not totally sure, since we don’t know how independent each is yet. I don’t think Neferpitou would be satisfied with anything less than murdering anything and everything again and again, though lol

  12. Oh yes it should be noted that Shaiapouf is one of the most hate able characters in the entire series. Which says everything it needs about how much of utter dick this guy is.

  13. does anyone notice that Pitou’s boobs are smaller in this episode? (compare it with the opening)

  14. Not much to say except that was a pretty well balanced episode. More lighthearted and humorous to counterbalance last week’s serious tone. As well as a focus on character interactions since, well, the training is pretty uninteresting.

Also: Bisky in a new dress and haircut is so adorable!

  15. I fucking love Palm! She reminds me of a cross between Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke (the way she blushes every time someone is civil to her, not the Sadako similarity), and Yuno. Instantly the best character.
