Fantasy Anime League spring 2013 edition – Watch my co-writers be crushed yet again

T2c4R

It’s that time again. Since we had quite a bit of fun doing the Fantasy Anime League posts last time, Shinmaru and Inushinde decided that they wanted to get their asses handed to them this season too. For those not in the know, FAL works a lot like those fantasy sports leagues that are all the rage amongst nerds disguising themselves as sports fans. You pick a team of anime airing next season, with two benched titles, and watch as they rack up points. The points are decided primarily on how many people on MAL are watching it, along with a bunch of other contributing factors. Basically it’s a test of how well you can predict popularity of upcoming season’s anime. You can join fairly easily if you have a MAL account. Post your team in the comments if you too are taking part.

Also dancing. Because that’s what I’ll be doing on their graves.

Bench: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko

Being easily the champ of The Cart Driver competitors last time around, competing with Inushinde and Shinmaru is barely a challenge for me anymore. Instead the challenge is can I go one better than last year’s second place finish. To do that, I’ll obviously need Attack on Ti-sorry, weeaboo names because we’re on MAL. I’ll need Shingeki no Kyojin on my team. If you don’t have that on your team this year, it’s either because you forgot or you’re not playing properly.

Things get a bit trickier after that. Gargantia feels like a safe pick. Yeah, Production IG mecha series with previous acclaimed writer Robotic;Notes didn’t do so hot last year, but the trailers for Gargantia look great compared to the slightly worrying R;N ones, so I’ll continue to bank on Butch Gen. Karneval looks to be the bishie laden show that will rally the female audience, what with the manga being inexplicably popular. Similarly for Henneko, which also has a bafflingly large fanbase for the manga despite being shit. But you know, MAL and taste.

The other 3 are largely wildcards. Sunrise are due a big mecha hit, and Valvrave looks to have potential. Hataraku Maou-sama and Yahari whatever are there as solid looking light novel crap that will inevitably garner a half decent audience. The big title missing from this list is Railgun S, but have you fools not learned from last season and Bakuman 3? Do you not think that 70+ episodes of previous series might be perhaps a large hurdle preventing Railgun S from growing in popularity enough? Yes I know two of them are just the Index series, but do you think that will matter to the newbies? Railgun will not be a big hitter, just you wait and see.

Hataraku Maou-sama!

Bench: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko

Oh, Scamp, so quick to belittle from atop the ivory tower. Railgun is in a solidly favorable position from my view. Watching those two shitty seasons of Index isn’t required; jumping right into Railgun isn’t particularly difficult. I’m not expecting it to be one of the season’s heaviest hitters, but a show that can be substituted in and pull in good numbers after a week or two? That’s a solid risk to take, especially Index as a whole is much bigger on MAL than Bakuman. Have fun weeping when Railgun’s raking in the points, Scamp.

We do agree on several shows, however; the one difference in our starting lineups is my insertion of Date A Live over Gargantia, which is admittedly a title that was on my short list of shows to include for a while. For the purposes of this game, though, I feel slightly more confident in Date A Live’s cadre of ladies. If Gargantia were to take off, though, I wouldn’t be surprised. I had another tough choice between Maou-sama and Devil Survivor, but video game adaptations are pretty spotty, in my experience, so I went with the former since it has a simple premise that lends itself to romance and comedy. An appealing, popular combination!

The others on my list are down to the logic of “people like looking at good lookin’ stuff,” whether that stuff is dudes, ladies or teenagers wrecking giants.

To Aru Kagaku no Railgun S
Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love: 2000%
Haiyore! Nyaruko-san W
Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Bride
Hayate no Gotoku! Cuties
Bench: Not relevant
Bench: Not relevant

The astute among you might notice a recurring theme in my choices: They’re all sequels to shows of varying quality. I chose nothing but sequels, because I’m morbidly curious to see just how far a list with one of the inexorable Hayate sequels can get without getting tearfully put down behind a shed, and I wouldn’t dare put it on a roster that didn’t have some kind of theme framed around shows that provide a second helping of mediocrity.

However, there is some thought put into the order, by using the ancient secret of looking at the members that plan to watch it, and arranging the results in the order of where MAL’s taste tends to skew. What with Railgun being one of the more anticipated sequels, and UtaPri being shoujo harem tripe with inexplicable popularity that made it bound for a second season, those two would have made it onto my regular list without the need for this horrible gimmick. Then there’s Nyaruko-san that, while nobody drooled over it, drew in more than enough people to warrant the sequel maybe being put on a bench slot if one was feeling lucky. After that, things get a bit hazy and I rely more on guesswork than actual observation. Samurai Bride is looking to be trashy shit, but Highschool DxD was eaten up, and that was the trashiest of trashy shit. Hayate no Gotoku sequel is a Hayate no Gotoku sequel, so I’m probably going to hate myself for thinking that adding it to my lineup would be a larf.

Do I expect to win with this roster? No, not really. I don’t even expect to beat Shinmaru, the eternal lowbar, since Shingeki no Kyoujin and Karneval are looking to be popular enough by themselves to stomp my five meager choices into the dust. Still, at least this way I can count on the fact that nobody will drop a perfectly good show just because the characters went gay for each other in episode eight, taking my chances of victory with them. Not that I’m bitter or anything.

  1. My first time around, I have no idea what I am doing.

    Karneval (TV)
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Date A Live
    Bench: Aku no Hana
    Bench: Kakumeiki Valvrave

  2. Rally to me, soldiers.

    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Namiuchigiwa
    Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

    Bench: Valvrave the Liberator
    Bench: Hataraku Maou-sama!

  3. Karneval
    Date A Live
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Dansai Bunri no Crime Edge
    Suisei no Gargantia
Bench: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.
    Bench: Aku no Hana

I tossed that roster off in like three minutes. Just went for the big stuff and the stuff that aired first.

  4. I… will… choose…

Naah. Too much effort. I’ll just wish good luck to everyone!
…which means that I wish the competition to end in a ginormous tie that will spawn infinite flame wars over tiny rule chicaneries in an attempt to find out a winner :3.

  5. Attack on Titan
    Date A Live
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru
    Photo Kano
    Karneval
    Bench: Suisei No Gargantia
    Bench: Aku No Hana

Went for the popular stuff, although I forgot that Hentai Ouji thing, but then decided my team needs risk-takers. Photo Kano is a bit of a long shot, but I’m hoping Madhouse + dating sim comes up with something. Aku No Hana is also an unpredictable risk, which is why it’s benched. Gargantia is too hard to judge at the moment, even with Urobuchi’s name on it.

  6. Shingeki no Kyojin
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S
    Karneval (TV)
    Date A Live
Bench: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.
Bench: Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.

Seeing that I have an almost identical team to Shinmaru for largely similar reasons is a bit worrying, past performance being considered. Some of these feel a bit like gambles, trusting that the fujoshi, pervert and Urobuchi installed bases will come through. No risk, no reward, though.

  7. Team: krais
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Date A Live
    Karneval (TV)
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Hataraku Maou-sama!
Bench: Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.
Bench: Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S

believing in the power of hentai and biribiri’s! i can only wonder how far can this team go.

  8. Shingeki no Kyojin
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Aku no Hana
    Date A Live

    Bench: Kakumeiki Valvrave

SnK and Gargantia are obvious choices. Gargantia not only has Urobuchi, but also cute girls. The other Urobuchi x cute girls series are Saya no Uta and Madoka, which were his biggest hitters.

The rest isn’t as clear. Valvavre is benched in case it’s the next Code Geass or Gundam 00. It might also fail because mecha don’t tend to do as well in popularity contests.

Date A Live was a reluctant choice. I’ve been hearing about it since last season, and /a/ is hyping the fuck out of it (well, for their definition of hype) – so it will be popular, just how much?

The Aku no Hana manga is known for being controversial. With the Mushishi team behind it seems like a solid choice. I can always bench it if it doesn’t work out.

    That’s five.

I’m not picking Railgun – Index had 100k viewers, Railgun 1 70k, Index 2 50k – meaning that Railgun 2 is likely to further drop to 30k. Which isn’t a bad number, but also not a particularly good one. Its advantage is that it’ll be oversubbed.

Yahari whatever is airing alongside Oreimo 2. Moreover, it has fantastic staff behind it, staff who are not used to directing this sort of otaku pandering crap. It might turn out like Nichibros, but it might not… does it deserve the risk?

Devil Survivor 2 has good chances of being popular among the ladies and comes with a pre-established fanbase. Game adaptations are risky though.

Karneval is a manga that was popular 7 years ago, and the other manga that got recommended along with it – 07-Ghost, Pandora Hearts, Amatsuki – didn’t exactly have hit anime adaptations. It also has to compete with the Arata Kangatari, Valvavre, Devil Survivor 2 and UtaPuri for girl attention. I predict that it will do badly.

Hataraku Maou-sama has one big weakness: the Maou is the guy. It’s a wildcard.

Hentai Ouji airs late and reminds me too much of Kotoura. I have a bad feeling about it and am leaving it out.

    So last two are:

    Yahari Ore no Seishun Love
    Bench: Devil Survivor 2

    Risky line-up is risky.

  9. It’s pretty funny that this officially starts when the newest season of Game Of Thrones airs.
“When you play Fantasy Anime League, you win or you die.”

    1. It’s an anime called Inukami. Guy gets stripped a lot in that thing for being a huge pervert. Not sure what The Cart Driver things, but I wasn’t a fan personally.

  10. No risks this season.
    -Date A Live
    -Karneval
    -Yahari Ore etc.
    -Devil Survivor
    -Attack on Titan
    -Gargantia
    -Hentai Ouji

I have no confidence in Date A Live in the long run; it seems trashy, ready made to crash a few strides out of the gate. Similarly, all the promo material for Yahari Ore no Seishun thingy seems lame, but that’s OK as long as they perform in the first few weeks because I expect to move both my bench titles in eventually.

I don’t trust non-franchise, traditional-scifi mecha anime, mainly because they are so rare nowadays I don’t think there’s much of an audience now. Does Valvrave have the mass fanservice appeal of Gundam 00 or Code Geass? It doesn’t seem like it, so I passed.

Some sequels do perform, but FAL takes the biggest ones out of the running (Fate Zero, OreImo). A year ago Korean Zombie Desk Car 2 put up top 5 numbers, which I rode in a 2nd place tie for most of the season. A better point of comparison for Railgun would be Bakuman S1 and 2. Both 1st seasons had similar length & viewership, though Bakuman had better rating & favorites and aired closer to its 1st season. If Railgun 2 performs to say, 75% of Bakuman 2 numbers with good ratings, low drops, subs et al., would that be good enough? Not quite, but it’s borderline.

A dark horse can be Crime Edge, whose trailer gave me the same feeling as Gosick, and the latter has really good numbers. Similarly, Maou-sama can turn out to be a Working!!-like romcom, but it’ll be reliant on its humor and I didn’t do enough research to have any confidence in it. If I didn’t register already, I might be tempted to switch in Maou-sama for Yahari Ore thingy. C’est la vie.

  11. I was very tempted to copy Scamps list so that if he does get it spot on and is heading for victory I have a chance to ruin it for him and deprive him of his top spot yet again. However, I decided that would be a bit of a dick move, and also not really in my interests either.

I chose after a little research, and wait to see how well I’ll do.

  12. Devil Survivor 2 The Animation
    Karneval (TV)
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S
Bench: Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.
    Bench: Date A Live

First time playing this, I just picked whatever so just beating Inushinde and Shinmaru would be enough for me.

  13. Shingeki no Kyojin
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Devil Survivor 2 The Animation
    Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S
    Karneval (TV)
    Bench: Kakumeiki Valvrave
    Bench: Arata Kangatari

I also have pretty much no idea what I’m doing. I picked Arata for a bench spot because it had so many A’s in the title, and must be a winner. The rest seem like they’re gonna be popular.

I read all of Attack on Titan after picking this list, as well. I dunno… could go horribly wrong.

  14. I am going to play for the 1st time despite not really being able to actually watch stuff & doing next to no research bar a quick scan over the season line-up and basically picking most of the stuff I’m not interested in.

    Shingeki no Kyojin
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru
    Karneval (TV)
    Hataraku Maou-sama!
    Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko
Bench: Toaru Kagaku no Railgun S
    Bench: Suisei no Gargantia

Attack on Titan is hyped – must have on list
Yahari ore no…. – Ridiculous long title = sure to be popular
Karneval – multicoloured bishie fluff with large fanbase; nuff said
Hataraku Maou-sama – actually does look halfway decent & fun
Hentai ouji – has the word ‘hentai’ in title.

Railgun 2 – ridiculously popular franchise for some reason
Gargantia – I am interested but will be a wait & see for MAL

  15. Hentai Ouji, an ecchi anime by JC Staff. While it definitely will have faithful fans, I don’t see how is it going to compete in this FAL. I have read the manga and the story is only as good as Mayo Chiki and such.

  16. hmm
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko.
    Suisei no Gargantia
    Karneval (TV)
Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Come wa Machigatteiru.

    Photo Kano
    Date A Live

Let’s see how out of touch I am with the general anime fandom, or at least those who are active in MAL.

  17. first time for playing FAL.
