Steins;Gate episode 21

I’ve been struggling to come up with a topic to talk about in this post. There’s not much more I can say on Okarin at this point, beyond the fact that he has finally reached the end of his tether and started attempting suicide to change events. I can’t really talk too much about Mayuri either, because she voices her thoughts out loud anyway. I know she’s meant to be a bit thick and her tiny brain can’t contain anything without spilling out, but having Okarin overhear her talk to a gravestone for 5 minutes was an incredibly lazy method of storytelling.

No, instead let’s talk about Kurisu.

Unlike Mayuri, Kurisu doesn’t voice every single issue and thought she has. That’s how you create a character that is unwilling to show her true feelings. You don’t suddenly remember mid-conversation that she’s a tsundere and toss in a blushing stuttered line. It didn’t hit me at the time when Okarin told her that she would die how calmly she took it. In fact, when it comes to facing things with a brave face, Kurisu has dealt with everything thrown at her far more calmly than Okarin has.

Mind you, it’s been Okarin who has been more proactive when issues appeared, albeit more often through blind rage and panic than calm thought. He was the one who leapt upon the Time Leap machine when Mayuri died in the first timeline. It’s often through this blind proactive-ness that they’ve gotten into this trouble in the first place though. It was his charging through the D-Mails that caused the timeline to shift the way it has. Kurisu hasn’t done anything to prevent the shifting timelines either though, so maybe she’s less blameless in this than I originally thought. You get the feeling that she’d still charge through with the D-Mails and Time Leaps even with the extra thought. If anything, she’d be more likely to keep her eye on the cold logical scientific side than Okarin’s human aim to stick to saving Mayuri. She did become the leader of CERN SERN, so we know she has the capability to be ruthless.

Okarin’s issue of which timeline to choose is solely a human issue on his part. Does he choose to save Mayuri or Kurisu (or, what it will more likely end up, some sort of compromise between the two)? Between Okarin’s human or Mad Scientist side, the human side will ultimately win over, so he won’t be able to choose between two humans he is friends with. Kurisu, on the other hand, could probably erase the human element from the equation and consider which timeline would be the better for humanity as a whole. Which is why I’m convinced she’ll choose to die.

In the current timeline, Mayuri dies, CERN SERN gets the time travel machine, and the world falls into that dystopian ruin. In the alternate world, Kurisu dies, CERN SERN never get the time travel machine and, presumably, the world doesn’t fall into ruin. The reason Kurisu dies I’m guessing is because Suzuha kills her when she travels back in time. She came back like a Terminator to eliminate a key component in what made CERN SERN take over the world. In this version of the timeline, CERN SERN never get their hands on the time travel machine, either through capturing Okarin and Kurisu after killing Mayuri or by having their science department ruin by Kurisu.

For the world not to become the dystopian future as told by Suzuha, they have to go to the timeline where Kurisu dies, and I’m pretty sure she knows that. She’s a smart girl. It’s also a fairly hard thing to come to terms with, sacrificing yourself for humanity and all that. No wonder she wanted some alone time to visit the place of her inevitable death. It’s not like they can test the theory a few times once they jump timelines, because Kurisu is the one who invented the Time Leap machine.

In short, Kurisu has to die.

…man, even I feel depressed writing that.

  1. I went back to watch the first episode to remember just how it unfolded. Thing is, Suzuha (the part-timer) is a product of the dystopian future where Daru creates the time machine to undo CERN’s work. If we go back to the Alpha timeline CERN never obtains the IBN5100 and the future is all in order so there is no need for Suzuha to kill Kurisu, no?

Or is that if Okarin does not send the original d-mail that CERN would eventually obtain the IBN5100 with Kurisu alive?

    1. Another thought that occurred to me is that the “satellite” doesn’t fall into the conference building until he sends the d-mail, so Suzuha couldn’t be responsible for killing Kurisu right? (sorry for double post)

      1. That’s a fair point. Because in that timeline, Suzuha didn’t need to go back in time to kill Kurisu because she was already dead.

        Yeargh, time travel

      2. Suzuha doesn’t necessarily have to only appear in the Beta line where Mayuri dies. She could possibly also be born in the Alpha line. But you’re probably right about Suzuha not being responsible for Kurisu’s death in the Alpha line, even if she was born in Alpha future. Because in the Alpha line. Kurisu is killed and she doesnt get to become the evil ruler of SERN. So no dystopian future no need for Suzuha to go back in time and kill Kurisu. Somebody else already did it.

And no, Okarin not sending D-mail is Alpha line. The dead of Kurisu took place before first D-mail. This means in the Alpha line Kurisu dies and does not live in the Alpha line anymore-…. Wait a second! OMFGosh! Those two last questions of you first post are totaly different but actually ask the same thing. How did you manage to ask the same thing in two totaly different sentences?

But hearing this I wonder, Suzuha came from the future of the Beta line. So in this future Kurisu betrays the lab at some point and possibly joins SERN. This could mean in either case, Kurisu is bound to meet a bad end. In Alpha she gets stabbed and dies without knowing anythig, in Beta she betrays the lab and joins SERN. So much for your admiration towards her character, Scamp.

  2. I remember writing a comment to your post about one of the last ten episodes, and I remember figuring out that it’s either Kurisu or Mayuri for Okarin. Oh so glorious storytelling.
I think Kurisu will save the day with either sacrificing herself or finding a way where everyone survives. Either way, she will take action.

Also, upcoming season sucks BAD (unlike eqinox seasons), not worthy of picking up the gems from the shit so the responsibility is yours to judge them correctly. Anyways, besides the ones with guaranteed quality i don’t think there’s anything watchable.

      1. Shinryaku II instead of last exile, besides EXACTLY my try-out-to-see-if-good list. Maybe I make sure that MIrai Nikki really is massacred but no more.

  3. Kurisu doesn’t stop the experiments because she has an experiment fetish. Remember the episode where Okarin ridicules her because she likes experiments and wouldnt be able to stop experimenting, herself. (No read it once more! It says ‘experimenting, herself.’ not ‘experimenting herself.’ Notice the comma that changes the meaning.)

‘You get the feeling that she’d still charge through with the D-Mails and Time Leaps even with the extra thought. If anything, she’d be more likely to keep her eye on the cold logical scientific side than Okarin’s human aim to stick to saving Mayuri.’

–> You get that feeling, because she has an experiment fetish.

In short Kurisu is a secretive, curious, emotionaly strong(, except when it comes to dealing with Okarin) and self-confident beatch, with an experiment fetish!

    1. Btw, I just went and also rewatched first episode. After making a ruckus at his first meeting with Kurisu and running away, Okarins cellphone acts strange and the screen suddenly jams. Than Mayuri walks in on him. She says she mailed him about not finding her Metal Oopa. Does this mean Okarins cellphone acts weird when Mayuri sends him a mail and his cellphone than suddenly connects to the time machine in the lab. Weird detail, but there might be potentially something in there. What if Mayuri is not actually as innocent as she looks and is actually the big evil guy controlling everything around Okarin behind the scenes, even his timeleaping and D-mailing?

      1. I was going to append, “Mayuri did it” to my post… that’d be one heck of a Shyamalan plot TWIST.

      2. The only thing that could be even a bigger twist is if Braun’s little daughter turns out to be the criminal mastermind behind everything, who time-leaped from her future position as the head of SERN to her present 5 year old self. All in order to ensure the safety of the future of SERN…

      3. Close, but no cigar: in the game it’s a time-slipped Nae who kills Moeka, and not FB. Yes she’s part of SERN, but not as the head, but a high-ranking member of the rounders.

Yeah, I miss the psychotic killer loli of the game.

      4. God gimme back my yandere Nae. Gimme back all the hatred and sorrow. Fuck Hanada Jukki. Fuck the Tokyo Youths Development Ordinance. Fuck Japanese stupid politicians.

    1. Okarin killed her? But no when we hear the other Okarin screaming he seems like he’s the one suffering. And that may have been because he chose to both protect Mayuri and Kurisu in the Alpha line, yet failed to do so.

The only other option that comes to mind is Mayuri? But she was with Okarin thus an aliby. I can only say either our Supa Hacka Hashida or mr. Braun.

      1. Wrong on all counts. Again, the one who really did it (and incidentally makes sure that time travel also exists in the Beta timeline) has been mentioned off-hand in Okabe and Kurisu’s conversation. Need even something clearer? It’s the one where they talk in the park under the moon.

      2. Uhhwhaaaa? That’s some crazy stuff right there, never woulda guessed it.

It’s episode 11 around 13′ if anyone else wants to see the conversation Myssa Rei is talking about.

  4. now you’re just mad that mayuri isn’t such a blob character as she is and christina was kinda tossed to the side in this ep.

    HATER.

  5. I’ll seriously consider jumping into the gamma timeline if im okarin. I dont really remember them saying there are only 2 timelines. why fix on going back to the old one? It might not be the only one mayuri is safe in.

  6. You got it wrong. Alpha is the current worldline, and Beta is the “original” one before the 1st D-mail. There is no reason for Suzuha to kill Kurisu whatsoever – SERN dystopian future will be cease to exist when Okabe deletes his 1st D-mail from their database and shifts the timeline into the Beta Attractor Field. And the Suzuha in ep1 couldn’t be the one from Alpha neither ’cause that will create a paradox. The world will simply erase her existence. If one would watch the first two episodes EXTREMELY careful, there are already a few hints to why time traveling technology still presents in that worldline and Suzuha’s purpose for going back in time.

And I totally disagree on Kurisu being a ruthless tyrant in the dystopian future. All the info we know of the future Kurisu is from Suzuha’s POV. All she knew is that Kurisu completed the time machine for SERN, and is being praised as the Mother of Time Machine at which point she’s already dead. Kurisu was shocked about this revelation back then, and said she will never help those SERN bastards. Suzuha also suggested that there’s a chance she was being forced into helping SERN. In fact going by the Attractor Field Theory, Kurisu MUST perfect the time machine for SERN for not interrupting the inevitable outcome of the dystopian future in Alpha Worldline.

P.S. Note that there’s no true “leader” in SERN. It’s merely a research institute. The Illuminati Committee of 300 has been pulling strings behind SERN, but the anime team feels like omitting it and made SERN the big bad instead.

    1. The tought of Kurisu actually not being realy a part of SERN, but being forced to invent the time machine because they held Okarin and the others hostage did come to my mind as a possibility. But hey! Why not just jump to conclusions and anger Scamp?

      1. takes out cellphone Hello? It’s me. We got our first minion. Proceed according to plan Ouroborus!

        Ah, the pleasure of it…
        Jk aside.
        Cool!
Scamp, I just stole one of your fans. Now my plan to take over your blogg is finaly paying off! Mwuhahaha… (can’t stop jking)
