While I generally try to watch the first episode of everything in a new season, I’m afraid that downloading Ro Kyu Bu would put me on some sort of international watch list. The token paedophile show of the season that people desperately try to claim “no really, it’s actually a heartwarming tale about friendship, teamwork, parenting and little girls asses”. So instead the new season begins with Noodle People Fighting Statues.
Surely this would be a good start to the season, right?
Nope. It was dreadful.
You would think with a synopsis that included a vampire girl fighting other vampires would be a bit action packed, right? Actually most of this episode consisted of absolutely nothing happening. There was an extended sequence of about 2 minutes of Saya skipping through the streets, singing a song to herself. The anime swung frequently towards shots of landscape that served no purpose except to drag time out even further. An awful lot of the anime was Saya walking from place to place, either running home or walking with her ditzy friends. It’s not that there’s very little happening in these scenes. There is flat out nothing happening whatsoever.
The scenes with something actually happening aren’t a whole lot better. Saya has been upgraded from her previous personalities in the past Blood anime (that is, no personality whatsoever) to this time being insufferably nice. She’s a Tohru Honda. A Hanato Kobato. A whatever the name of that twat from Bungaku Shoujo is called. The admirable, cute, ditzy and utterly uninteresting to watch in their daily lives. But Blood C seems to think that yes, we do want to watch Saya think about petting a puppy before almost tripping up and then deciding she has to hurry home. Oh, and now here’s a picture of the background scenery for a bit.
Lalala singing a song while skipping to school lalala
The single fight scene that does occur in the episode comes totally out of nowhere too. Dad gives Saya a sword, she walks to a water front, spends ages ‘building up tension’ (read ‘look at this shot of some hills and clouds’) before Saya starts having a long duel with a statue. The fight scene was sort of cool, but we were given no reason to care about what was happening. Apparently Saya is incapable of having her head chopped off, even if clamped between a pair of pincers and swung about like a rag doll, so it’s hard to care about whether she wins the fight or not. Not that I particularly cared about Saya in the first place. I hadn’t gotten emotionally attached to her while watching her skipping to school. The fight scene had no explanation, hence the scene was a series of gothic colours that was impossible to care about.
I get what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to set the scene before the mystery horror shows up. It’s trying to do a Higurashi/Madoka/Steins;Gate/Shiki thing. Set the scene before sending the entire thing spiralling down into chaos and madness. But Blood C does nothing right. The main character is dull and impossible to care about what happens to her. The jokes have canned laughter (well, it’s a classroom laughing, but it serves the same purpose) that you feel awkward hearing because of how utterly unfunny they are. The episode drags with drawn out sequences of nothing happening in an attempt to set the scene. The horror element is poorly directed. Most of all, it’s just boring.

Meaning that this show is for people who love CLAMP, not for Blood fans. People like me 😛
But seriously, I think that anyone not an established CLAMP fan would have a hard time liking this show.
I’m still living off the rose-tinted glasses given to me by Chobits. I think they’ve been worn down fully now
Chobits is a wonderful manga, and you are just saying this because you have seen two episodes of the anime and assumed it was the same shit like Dears, Mr. or Miss Anon. But it isn’t. It is a wonderful manga about true love and family, not a harem, nor is it filled with pointless fanservice. Instead, every bit of Ecchi that we see of Chi grows into either into something that sets the world up (like how mankinds treats the robots, and how Hideki sees this different) or sexual tension that really served its purpose in the end of the manga with the plot twist. The main character isn’t a High School aged douche nor a miserable loser with no personality, instead he is an rather intelligent, but not exaggerated, adult who stands up for the persons he cares for and grows through the manga. Also, in volume 8, he really said some inspirational things that moved my heart.
He’s voiced by Crispin Freeman, that automatically makes it worth watching.
i love clamp but i still cant bring myself to try chobits out, both the manga or anime.
bleh, human x robot has always rubbed me the wrong way.
Chobits anime > manga
😛
Chobits manga > anime. 😀
you guys are kidding that ugly glass guy is her love interest? come on, really? he is urg! fujimoto-san was 100x better than him and that other dude is handsome! >.< I drop this if that ugly guy is her interest!
As I was saying, they will be the Yaoi couple. Either them or the dad and the cooking dude. It’s always like that in CLAMP.
I was thinking of watching this for the hair porn in the OP, but I guess not. :Ia
Oh? I had just noticed that the raws were out. It’s a shame that this is floundering, I had set my hopes on it for this season…
Exactly what I was thinking. 20 minutes of nothing, Saya is fucking boring, the fight scene was cool but had no purpose, and the animation looks like it’s skipping one in two frames.
Possibly even shittier than Blood+
I’ve been kinda surprised at all the hate for Blood+. Sure I was young when I saw it, and it didn’t exactly set my world alight, but it wasn’t half bad
All I remember about it is that Saya was extremely angsty and whiny, and probably shouldn’t have gone on for 51 episodes.
On the plus side, Blood+ reminds me of Celty, because Saya has the same voice actress. Feels good man.
Blood+ was ten times better than FSN, and you dropped that after two episodes.
Ten times worse of course.
I’m a bit disappointed by how disjointed and boring this initial episode was, but willing to give it another two episodes.
NOODLE PEOPLE~
I kinda enjoyed the episode, if only for the fun I had with the CLAMP cliches.
Saya is like Kobato, only worse. Kobato had at least that charming Mary Poppins thing going on, with all the small children and such, and she was ditzy and not “good at everything”. She also had a likeable love interest. And Ioryogi-san. He is the best thing about Kobato.
I had fun counting all the Clamp cliches. Twins, Purity Sue, lots of symbolic stuff, a tsundere “straight man” (the only difference this time: it’s a woman, and it’s not the love interest. At least…. I think.), Noodle People, setting up Yin/Yang characters (the class representative and the guy coming late, I know that the glasses guy is supposed to be the love interest but COME ON, it’s just like every other CLAMP manga), a stay-at-home-dad who cooks and is way too nice, the old warrior kind of guy who is all cold but will probably die at some point, slapstick humour, Les Yay, slapstick humour but at the same time a DAAAAARK bloody thing going on behind the scenes with lots of ANGST, samurai swords, shrine maiden, Shintoism, lots of delicious food that will make you hungry, and of course, a ditzy main heroine who often falls down and comes late to school, and doesn’t get that the others are having the hots for her. sigh
All we need now is Time Travel, alternate dimensions, mind screw, more pretty dresses that are unappropriate to the occasion, Yandere, the Tokyo Tower, repetitions, an “Alice in Wonderland” special chapter, some plot twists, incest and Ho Yay. Thanks to our Yin/Yang characters, I think we will be getting the last one soon. They already look like Yuuki and Touya from CCS.
Yes, I am a big Clamp fan, but I also love making fun of them.
I personally think I will keep watching this for a few episodes, for the cliches that are way too much fun to ignore, and that kickass opening.
I must not like Clamp. Or maybe I need to watch Cardcaptor NO SCAMP NO MORE MAGICAL GIRL STUFF
Card Captor Sakura is fun! It got Purity Sues, weird Deus Ex Machinas, girls being insufferable nice to eachother, super cuteness and sometimes you can’t believe they got away with the portrayal of relationships. But it’s also charming, the magical girl theme is original (sadly that means also no kickass transformations), the characters can be, while sometimes so pure that it’s annoying, also fun to watch and develop, Sakura in particular. (Of course then came Tsubasa Chronicle and made Sakura the whiny Distressed Damsel for Shaoran to rescue. sigh)
Also it’s the only CLAMP manga that had the balls to actually make the BL relationship that’s in every manga besides Chobits and Angelic Layer really, undoubtly canon and them being in a relationship afterwards. Okay, there is Subaru and Seishirou, but you know… it didn’t really work out.
Tokyo Babylon was a gorgeous manga, that got continued in X. It was so well done that you can’t help but cheer when Subaru and the oh so badass Seishirou show up again. Sadly, X can’t really live up to that, thanks to it’s repetitive (YES, WE KNOW THAT THERE ARE TWO KAMUIS. SHUT UP!) nature and the rather camp bloody scenes, but it’s gets really cool in later volumes.
Angelic Layer and Magic Knight Rayearth are both Kids Shows, but they are exactly what they aimed for: exciting, fast paced, cool and fun. CLAMP school detectives is cute, small boys in very short shorts doing cute things. Pretty much the genderflipped version of every moe detective manga.
Then there is, of course, the crossover xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicle. Tsubasa Chronicle is the most camp, Clamp-cliche-filled and weirdest Mind-Fuck adventure ever. At times it’s also not very good. xxxHolic is a different one, it uses slapstick, but the antics of Yuuko-san make it hilarious. But what really makes xxxHolic tick is that it has some really dark moments of brilliance, and is philosophical as well. Sadly, near the end it got worse, and the ending sucked. My favourite Clamp Manga is probably Chobits, no doubt about it. Oh, and there’s a new CLAMP manga, Gate 7. I have only read 3 chapters, and already spotted some cliches. But it’s so. Very. Pretty. Damn, that one is pretty.
So what I’m saying is that Card Captor Sakura is a fun ride, but I don’t think you will like it very much.
my favorite clamp series are clover and gohou drug. clover because it was startlingly poetic, and gohou drug obv because of the delicious BL tension (which is as subtle as a frying pan but whatever).
tsubasa was a fun crossover ride, but that ending made my head spin @_@
Clover somehow bored me… I dunno, maybe I should try to read it again, it was very pretty, at least, and I was younger when I tried to read it. Legal Drug is… meh to me, but only because it’s not finished. It could have been really cool, with that xxxHolic-esque Ghost Busters theme, but it ended on that low note, with that boys-only-school cliche that everyone is gay and the main character gets in the beauty/cosplay contest, where everyone dresses in drag.
ah i read clover in high school. the script is quite lyrical, so i can understand why a younger audience would be a bit alienated. plus i love me some mystical sci-fi ❤ clover is apparently on hiatus/unfinished as well. i await its continuation~
lol, i hear the main characters for xxxholic were based on the main 2 in legal drug XD ahh whyyy do my two favorite series have to go on hiatus ;((((
I was wondering what was rubbing me wrong with the episodes, besides those awful twins. And you’re right, it is full of CLAMP cliches.
Slow episode was slow, but I’m willing to give it a chance. I enjoyed Tsubasa despite the mindscrew; it’s the only shonen manga I ever collected all volumes of. So I’m willing to give Blood C a chance on that score.
Such a shame. I really was hoping to get into CLAMP’s work again, and the synopsis sounded pretty cool. Heck, Saya looked cool in the pics from the charts but…like you said, noodle people. One thing that ticked me off about xxxHolic, but oh well.
The show’s a lost cause for me when you said Saya = Honda Tohru.
As a side note…what is it with the numerous shows featuring vampires these days?? I wonder if Twilight has anything to do with it… shudder …or even Vampire Knight… headdesk
Has Japan even heard of Twilight?
Vampire Knight might as well be Twilight in manga form. I read a volume of it, and at the beginning of every chapter they said “Hi, my name is Yuki and I go to True Cross academy blahblahblah”
At the beginning
of every chapter
It was horrible. On the flipside, I’ve been tempted to buy the Twilight manhwa because that fucking art man, that fucking art
Vampire Knight was like one of my very first real anime. (meaning not starters like naruto) And I adored it at the time. Now that I think back though, I was constantly frustrated because nothing. ever. happened.

I agree, but this is just mindless enough that I can see myself forcing my way through this out of boredom if nothing else. >.<
You should have realized that an already bad IP would be worse done today with CLAMP.
It gets better, I swear!
/notreally
Hurrr expecting a masterpiece from the first episode.
Ikr. But this is Scamp we’re talking about. He can not refrain himself from being all honest and bashing up the anime for everything he doesn’t like. And that’s the way we like it.
The first episode was shit. I don’t see how that has anything to do with any supposed expectations.
It wasn’t that bad if you ask me, except for the singing n trippin till school part. That was truly not needed. Meh, can’t do anything about it if they tried the show with more peacefull scenese to an anime which ends with a blood splattered girl coming home and saying she has no injuries. OH gawd!
At any rate, I don’t see why this first episode which was primarely only introducing the every day life of the main character has the need to be that awesome. What’s important is wether or not this will have any major influence on the maing characters actions later on.
What was she even singing about? It wasn’t a real song. It was like she was trying to jump start a musical but then failed.
“They alllll deserve to die!
Even you, Mr. Puppy – even I.
Because the lives of the wicked should be made brief!
For the rest of us death will be a relief!
We allll deserve to die!”
…alas, it was not to be.
Am I the only one who realized the potential plot-related stuff?
The black haired guy who keeps watching Saya. Saya on her way back with all her suspicious stalker pauzes. The fact that there was talk about some kind of light!
They may not all be that interesting. But I have to admit those things got me curious.
Saya is not normal. Maybe her body is realy tough as her special attribute. The reason Saya got all smashed up here and there and survived a scissor attack on her neck was probably to hint us to this.
I never watched any previous series of Blood. Only fragments, but those f*cking fragments were enough to keep me away from the series. Only my Clamp fandom got me to watch this one. I have to admit altough it’s not such an amazing one, I can give it some credits. This one is probably better of not comparing to the previous Blood series.
Twins were cute. Like those bunnys from xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicles. I like how they are made to be so cute.
i really liked Blood +, so i gotta give this a chance. I’m suprised so many people hated it. Yea it was 1 of the first shows i watched, but there was action, a decent story, and even though i hated Saya she finally became worth watching at the end.
The taste is for CLAMP fans only I guess.
i love clamp, but “tohru honda” was all you needed to say for me to stay away.
uggghhhhhh.
Whhat fthe fuck she’s unsufferbly nicee? Those fucking assholes! I will not acceptf this!
Ps I’m drunish
I’d like to ask those who are staying away from the show because of Tohru Honda a question: Did you ever read up to the end of the manga? Even Purity Sues have their issues, and her development made her a pretty well-rounded character. One of the reasons I’m not giving up on this incarnation of Saya is because there might be a reason for her characterization. Maybe it’s a way for her to adjust to her violent side or something.
As an aside, I watched the dubbed version of Blood+ a few years back and I loved it. Probably because I hadn’t read Scamp’s blog back then, and so hadn’t contracted some strain of elitism from him and his merry men and women. 😉
it’s because mangaka make most purity sues so unlikable in the first place that i don’t care to see any further “developments” anyways. tohru honda was so pure and charitable and cheese and BLEAGH. i made it to volume 13 of the manga purely for a handful of characters before the melodrama got to them too. dropped.
it’s possible to make purity sues likable…i mean chiruha from dear is one of my favorite characters. she’s a clueless naive dork lol. she reminds me of betty white’s character from the golden girls 8D
The episode suffered from not enough to show, while explaining almost nothing beyond “Go there, kill that shit.”
At least the fight scene didn’t look too bad.
What a shitty shit first episode. Even the fight scene sucked because it made no god damn sense whatsoever. How in the hell did Saya escape from the claw? Did the statute just decide to let her go for no reason? Garbage.
